古代考试“破天荒”

孙光宪《弱梦琐言》：唐朝，荆州南部每年送举人赴京考进士，接连四五十年没考中一个。人们讥笑，称荆南为“天荒”。可是，唐宣宗大中四年，有一个荆南举人叫刘蜕，考中了进士。人们称此事为“破天荒”。

古代三级考试制度如下：
(应试资格) (考试地点) (考试名称) (得中称呼) (第一名)
秀才 省会 乡试 举人 解元
举人 京城 会试 贡士 会元
贡士 太和殿 殿试 进士 状元

乡试目的在解送人才到京师参加会试，又称解试，第一名称解元。会试目的在进贡人才参加殿试，合格者称贡士。入京师应礼部试，须投状书，第一名称状元。
